As a result, they have plenty of answers prepared when it comes to questions about their professional qualifications. However, when asked about their motivation, they are often unprepared or respond too superficially. This can prove to be a fatal mistake.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/karrierecoaching.ch\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Peter N\u00e4f<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You might be thinking: Isn\u2019t a job all about getting the work done well\u2014so why is motivation so important?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s imagine a company hires a candidate who is clearly qualified for the role. She has the necessary experience and skills\u2014perhaps she\u2019s even overqualified. Her motivation never comes up during the interviews. A few months into the job, she realizes she\u2019s not truly interested in it and decides to quit. What do you think such a hiring mistake costs the company?<\/p>\n<h5>Hiring mistakes are expensive<\/h5>\n<p>A common estimate suggests that turnover in highly qualified roles can cost a company up to one year\u2019s salary. These costs include, among others, recruitment expenses (job ads, <a href=\"https:\/\/karrierecoaching.ch\/en\/glossary-headhunter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">headhunters<\/a>), the time invested by employees involved in the hiring process, and productivity losses due to the vacancy. During her brief tenure, the employee receives a full salary, even though she is not yet fully productive. The search, recruitment, and onboarding of her replacement adds another round of expenses\u2014roughly equivalent to a full year\u2019s salary.<\/p>\n<p>Given these substantial costs, it makes sense for companies to evaluate not just a candidate\u2019s qualifications but also whether the job and work environment are truly appealing to the candidate\u2014as I\u2019ve discussed in the article <a href=\"https:\/\/karrierecoaching.ch\/en\/double-the-work-for-recruiters-and-applicants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00abDouble the work for recruiters or for applicants\u00bb<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to these costs, we can reasonably assume that employees with low motivation will perform less effectively than highly motivated ones. And finally, in the case of an overqualified employee, there\u2019s also the risk of boreout &#8211; possibly leading to health-related absences.<\/p>\n<h5>It\u2019s about genuine motivation<\/h5>\n<p>So, prepare for questions about your motivation just as thoroughly as you do for questions about your qualifications. And most importantly: It\u2019s about genuine motivation\u2014not just saying what you think <a href=\"https:\/\/karrierecoaching.ch\/en\/glossary-recruiter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recruiters<\/a> want to hear. Many applicants respond with clich\u00e9s like: \u00abI\u2019m looking for a new challenge,\u00bb or \u00abI want to grow professionally and contribute my experience,\u00bb and so on.<\/p>\n<p>Just as with questions about your <a href=\"https:\/\/karrierecoaching.ch\/en\/glossary-strengths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strengths<\/a>, experienced recruiters won\u2019t be satisfied with generic answers. Your motivation needs to be believable. Ideally, recruiters should be able to see that the position genuinely makes sense for you.
